How to Remove Red Wine Stains from Sofa Cushions

There are few things more frustrating than spilling red wine all over a new sofa. However, if you act quickly, you don't have to resign yourself to the stains. Follow these steps to remove red wine from your sofa.

1. Blot Up the Wine

As soon as the stain occurs, you need to spring into action. Grab a paper towel and blot up as much of the wine as you can. If the paper towel becomes saturated, discard it and use a new one until no more wine comes out of the fabric.

2. Create a Cleaning Solution

There are many products that claim to remove red wine stains, but you may not have them in your home when the spill occurs. It's more important to act fast to tackle the stain than to use a specialist product to treat it. You can create a homemade red wine treatment by mixing dishwashing detergent with cool water. If you're out of dishwashing detergent, dry cleaning solvent also works well.

3. Use a White Cloth to Clean

If you have a light-coloured sofa, there is a risk that the dye from your cleaning cloth could leak out and stain the sofa cushions. Use a white cloth to sponge your homemade cleaning solution onto the stain. Keep sponging the cleaning solution into the upholstery until no more will absorb into the fabric.

4. Blot Up the Cleaning Solution

Next, take a dry cloth and blot the stain, drawing as much liquid as you can out of the fabric. If you can't see any signs of red wine left behind in the sofa, leave the stain to dry and then check it to ensure it has completely gone. If the sofa cushion is still stained, repeat the steps listed above to remove even more of the wine.

5. Try a Commercial Cleaning Solution

Some cleaning products are designed to remove red wine and other organic stains from household items. If you can't get the stain out of the sofa using dishwashing detergent, you might like to try one of these products. Before you apply the product to your sofa cushion, check that it is suitable for use on the type of fabric that your upholstery is made from. If you're not sure, do a patch test on the underside of the cushion to ensure the cleaning solution doesn't bleach or stain the fabric.

6. Consult a Professional

If you've tried everything and nothing has worked, it's time to call in the experts. Consult an upholstery cleaning service for help removing the red wine stain from your sofa.
